Heartland was started in 1994 by Chris McDaniel who began his insurance career as an agent “knocking” on doors at the age of 18.

From a small town background, Chris began his insurance career with the Larry D Barnes agency in Trenton, MO. in 1985. After a successful career of what today is now the Barnes Insurance Group of Columbia, MO., Chris started Heartland Financial Group in April 1994 from the 2nd bedroom in his Independence, MO duplex.

In 1996, Heartland built a 10,000 square foot facility in Lee’s Summit, MO that employed eight full time staff members and over 50 career sales associates; Heartland was on its way!

In December 1999, Heartland acquired Successful Sales Systems, a Midwestern Sales brokerage firm that exclusively marketed products for four national companies. With this acquisition Heartland Financial Group grew overnight to over 6,000 contracted sales associates.

In 2004, Heartland Financial Group clipped the $10,000,000 dollar mark in senior health sales. In 2003, Heartland became one of the top distributors of Long Term Care insurance, topping sales of over 7 million in new annualized sales.

In June of 2005, Chris McDaniel purchased the current corporate head quarters, a 60,000 square foot building, located in Blue Springs, MO., a suburb just 20 miles from downtown Kansas City.

In December 2006, Heartland began the search to acquire a multi-state established insurance carrier. After an extensive search process Heartland began negotiations with Dixie National Life Insurance Company. Founded in the state of Mississippi, Dixie National Life is an independent domestic carrier admitted in 23 states. On September 30, 2008, Heartland Financial Group formed Heartland Holding Company, the parent company for Heartland Financial Group, Heartland Properties of Missouri and Heartland National Life Insurance Company.

Today throughout the Heartland distribution network annual sales surpass 20 million, making Heartland Financial Group one of America’s leading Senior Health/Life Insurance distributors.

In December 2008, Heartland National Life entered a strategic agreement with Equitable Life and Casualty Insurance Company of Salt Lake City, UT to provide administrative services and re-insurance for Heartland National Life.
